Did Mickey Mouse Kill Disco?

May 6th, 2008

We know that “Video Killed the Radio Star,” but what specific and single entity killed Disco?   Broad summaries of the changing tastes of society does not do for Disco what the Buggles so succinctly described regarding musicians with a face for radio several years later.

Thanks to Katy, otherwise known as her Super Hero Alter Ego, RollerKaty, for a stirring up a painful childhood memory of mine at TheRollerBlog.   The Mickey Mouse Disco Album would be definitely a part of any good thesis on why Disco sputtered and died, or evidence of the moment when it was about to crumble.    The creative moment when someone in a meeting suggested that a Disco version of “It’s a Small World” must be unleashed on the world had to involve a compromised mental state for sure.

If you were old enough to have any conscious memories from any part of the 70s, or you weren’t conscious until much later and just like the retro vibe, the site is definitely worth a stroll and a laugh or too as well.

I have to admit that I got a kick out of the song “Macho Duck” - but “Watch Out for Goofy”? Or, even worse, “It’s A Small World”? Pretty awful. And, in retrospect, pretty entertaining. :)

Well, that should have been handled with a “single”, not a whole album lol
I think you are on to something though - maybe the whole big concept was the Macho Duck song and they couldn’t leave well enough alone and had to force themselves to fill a whole album.

For some reason I could never figure out what the lyrics were to Watch Out for Goofy.

    Watch out
    Watch out for Goofy
he’s a disco ____(something) Animation? Inhibition?

Anyway, I hope to not get any of those songs stuck into my head!

I like reading posts and finding out what people think. I will keep an eye on the information you will add and see what you come up with. thank you

I’m pretty sure that Goofy was a disco demolition. …just from memory. I used to work in a record store in ‘79 and it was an in-store play album. Some things are permanently etched in my memory and no amount of alcohol can erase them.

Dr. X…Does one want to really strive to be a “Disco Demoltion?” I mean, what would that entail? Sorry that you had to suffer all these years with that song etched into your brain. It could be worse though. WAY worse….
