A Recent East West Musical Jacket on Ebay

December 27th, 2008

eastwest.gifAn East West Musical Leather Jacket was featured on Ebay recently. The item was bid up to $1,625.00, but the reserve was not quite met. Unreasonable? Maybe not.  East West Musical jackets are very sought after, and are considered one of the “ultimate” leather jackets to own and I have seen particular examples go for upwards of  several thousand dollars.

All the jackets have an artistic bent to them. Sometimes it is very obvious, such as hand painting of the leather, or the leather pieced together to create a specific pictorial design. Often, other times, even if a jacket is monochromatic, the tailoring and cut is very inventive. The jacket pictured, offered by designervintagelabels4u, falls into the latter category.  Pay special attention to the pocket design and how the front stitching/yokes play a visual part.  I would put the value at of course less than the louder and more intricate jackets just because people are willing to pay higher for a theme, but this one is also a very handsome example as well.

If you see an East West Musical label, it is definitely worth taking a second look at the item.  You will more likely find them on the west coast, but of course, as anything, people migrate with their possessions.  If you are a vintage fashion collector and you spot one at a steal, check the condition of course, but try not to hyperventilate.

    Hi Wendy,

I would do a little research before I put it up on any internet site to sell. Firstly, do an honest inventory of the condition. Note any brittleness, tears in the lining, etcetera. Some things don’t matter as much as others, but buyers will appreciate your thoroughness and pay more when they know what they are getting. Condition is very important to disclose.

Do you have any information about who owned it prior or were you the sole owner. It doesn’t have to be anyone famous but the “story” of a garment sometimes is interesting to people. Also, do some research on the style. Search on the internet or use other resources to see if there is any info about the style which narrows the date or gives you any other info. Clear pictures are a must.

Also, it is sometimes good to show it on bulletin boards/forums/chat groups where collectors are. It could give you more valuable information and generate interest.

As far as Ebay, review the fees carefully and also determine what is the bottom number you are willing to part with the jacket for as you will still have to pay the fees if the item does not sell.. If recent auction results don’t satisfy, hold off if you don’t need to immediately free up the money. I am not familiar with that style, so don’t know if it is elaborate or a solid color, so you will have to take that into account too. There are other places that you can sell it, of course, but since you mentioned Ebay I thought I would talk about that.

I have thought about it some more, Wendy. You may want to check live auction houses as well. There is a seasonal vintage sale where high end things are sold. I will try to look back in the “useless info” section of my brain to look up more about it.

I was at Goodwill Saturday when I found a leather jacket that caught my eye. I’m sad to say I bought it even though it wasn’t my size (if only it were just a little bit bigger!) but thought of a friend who would love the piece. I felt like I was stealing from Goodwill when I paid a total of $5 for a very charming leather jacket in almost like-new condition.

I got home and figured I’d learn more about the brand, wich is an East West jacket…I almost had a heart attack. I knew nothing of the brand, the name, the history, the demand… I appreciate Wendy’s question because I, too, have now considered selling it (another sad thing to admit because my friend would love it)

Now you said it’d be good to put it on any message boards where collectors may be, any suggestions of sites to look at? I’ve just started really looking into this and am lost on where to look.

Thanks, if for nothing more than the post!
